Subject: Some thoughts on FireFly

I live in the UK, but do not underestimate the detirmination of the quiet (Silent?) man. *lol*

In other words, I've managed to see all the eps so far, and I like what I've seen.

A few basic elements:

Yeah, in broad terms it is indeed a western, picking up many of the themes of that forgotten genre (Did you know that 60% of all films ever made are westerns? Filming wild west stories was once BIG business, and it fueled the first golden age of Holywood) it also mixes in some nice cultural themes too, for example: Chineese is liberally spattered throughout our characters' speech, often in the middle of sentances. A small touch but clever.

One of the main themes of the show is opression by an uncaring, secretive government, while as a counterpoint, a strong Humanist theme runs through the episodes I have seen so far.

I would say it's too simple to label Firefly as a 'Sci-fi western', as I'm afraid many will do (and have done already), because there's some clever themes at work here, mixed with some exclently written & acted character-based humour that doesn't feel at all forced.

Hold on as I think of even more useless twaddle to say about this show :-)
