Subject: Henke, Hopkins lose....

an epic playoff game to arch-rival Chaska high in overtime. From MN web accounts, it was a great high school game. Mitch Henke played very well and led all scorers with 25 points against the number 2 ranked AAAA team(Hopkins was #1)featuring 6'9" Gopher pledge Spencer Tollackson. Big game against high level competition. I'm thinkin' Henke will contribute next year the way Denison did this year:gradually increasing in PT and performance.
Hope springs eternal.
Anyone have any recruiting news?

[> Looking forward to Next Year -- Bronco66, 18:53:06 03/21/04 Sun

no news ... but want to say thanks to JCard, M4Prez, goBroncs, BroncAlum, Big Valley, the folks from Miss St, Bronco Moms and everyone who has posted here this past season ....

in spite of what some may say the Broncos had a good year ... not a GREAT year but a good year ....

near wins over Villanova, BYU, Miss St. and the ZAGS ... just a Point (or two) away ... and not to forget an early season win over UOP turn a 16-16 season to 20-12 (add Doron's buzzer not-beater in Malibu and its 21-11)

that's a lot of top (and athletic??) teams that the Broncos played and stayed with ... so from the looks of that SCU may not have made it past the second round of the tourney ... but the way they were playing at the end of the season might have beaten a LOT of teams in the tourney ...

loosing Jim, and J.R and Alex is tough ... Good Luck to them in LIFE ... the "real" tourney ...

we do however get to keep Brandon, Doron, Ethan, Graham, Jordan, Kyle, Linden, Scott, Scott, Sean, and Travis as well as DD, SS, SS, and LP and add Brody and Mitch ... and ???

I am looking FORWARD to next year ... the league will be tougher next year ... and so I trust will the Broncos ... GU is talking about "reloading" with P-MAC (from Canada) and the guy from down-under (CLEM? from NZ) so they should be tough again ... but Bankhead and Stepp and Cory will be gone ...

SMC is the one to watch ... they had our number this year ... I'm betting that DD will have something for them next time we meet ..

so here's to a good spring recruiting season ... hope we get a couple more that want to (and can) be giant killers ... we will have a chance to do that again next year

[> Henke named first team all Metro Minnie.... -- JCard, 18:15:53 03/22/04 Mon

From the Minn. Star Tribune:
Mitch Henke, 6-7 forward, Hopkins, senior

A hustling team leader for the perennial power Royals, who fell one game short of the state tournament (losing to Chaska). He averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds. He played at state the past two seasons, winning the 4A crown as sophomore. Has signed with Santa Clara.....
The kid is sounding more promising all the time.

[> [> Looking forward to Seeing Mitch in a Bronco Uniform -- Bronco66, 20:23:48 03/22/04 Mon

and if he has a couple of inches (or more) yet to grow that would be even better ...

I hope the 6-7 is a real growth over the previously reported 6-6 .... in any case his size, shooting, and seemingly willingness to crash the boards will be most welcome ....

If Linden continues to "improve" as he did this year (especially the last couple of games) ... Sean pickups up some more beef and continues to grow in his agressiveness .. and Travis works on his move to the right ... I'm liking my Broncos more and more ...

[> [> Henke's Former HS Teammate named Big10 Frosh of Year -- Bronco66, 23:02:01 03/29/04 Mon

Kris Humphries of Minnesota is College Basketball News' Freshman of the Year. The 6-9 forward became the first freshman in Big Ten history to lead the league in both scoring and rebounding this past season.

let's hope that some of the Hopkins High water/coaching/whatever follows Mitch to Santa Clara ... a WCC Frosh of the Year would be nice ... (although I believe it's now an All-Freshman team ... which is ok too)

[> [> Henke also 1st team All State by St Paul Pioneer Press.... -- JCard, 19:19:07 03/30/04 Tue

A very encouraging description of Mr. Henke in the SPPP, except for our re-occuring entry into the UC system:
MITCH HENKE

Hopkins

6-6, senior, forward

A three-year starter for the Royals. Did everything and played hard all the time. Could play any position. A good shooter who could post up, rebound and handle the ball on the wing. A good passer who played tough defense. Averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds a game. Signed with UC Santa Clara.
