Subject: Things new AD needs to do

1. Improve basketball WCC's worst basketball attendance.

2. Bring back football at an affordable level (see USD).

3. Do anything possible to change the morgue atmosphere surrounding Bronco athletics.

None of the above will be easy under the current administration, but it's worth a try.

#1) should be easy since it's soooo bad.
#2) this will never happen. For your own sake I recommend people just get over it.
#3) not sure I understand what you mean. Most sports are doing well ... obviously soccer being our best.

A side note re soccer: Ryan Cochrane is really playing well in defense for the SJ Earthquakes. I think he is only 20 having left school after his sophmore year. Steve Cronin on the other hand doesn't play much because the Earthquakes (who drafted both in the MLS first round) have the Canadian national team keeper on their roster, and he is very good despite being in his mid-late 30's. Jamil Walker, a lowly MLS draft pick by the Earthquakes the previous year, also from Santa Clara, is a sub. He was a hero in their championship run last year.

Soccer has been successful, and it's so international, yet Bronco attendance still falls a little short of Santa Clara's old D-II football team.

By the way, what do the Jesuits have against football? They act as if football encourages drunken riots. Like soccer.

My point is that Division I is an entertainment-centered division. Although I like nothing better than a women's water polo match, the fact is Santa Clara athletics has very few fans.

What sports attract fans? Football and men's basketball.

Dayton is a Catholic school with a comparable enrollment. If you want an idea of how much bigger UD's fan base is, you don't have to look up attendance figures. Just visit the Dayton Rivals board. Hint: you won't see posts from last February on page one.

Maybe Santa Clara could learn a few things from the Flyers.

Santa Clara's triumphs with the Sears Cup and gender equity are wonderful. Now can we focus attention on some sports that matter to fans?

Yeah but when we had football it sucked. The atmosphere at games was high schoolish except for when we played St. Mary's. Other that that it was Southern Utah, SLO Northridge, Davis, etc. The whole thing just made our school seem rinky dink.

I genuinely feel bad for ex SCU football players. I also think that the lack of process when they just announced "no more football" was a crime. But the end result is the right one. And totally regardless of my meaningless opinion, football just simply is not coming back, ever. So people should just get over it.

I understand you're not a fan.

But when you say the atmosphere sucked, you're making a statement about what's left of SCU sports. They suck even worse.

I think bringing football back will help bring fans back. On that point, I guess we simply disagree.
