Subject: Maui Report (part 1)

Well I'm back on the Mainland ... and as the Booster t-shirts said

... Maui Invitational 2003 ....
... It's NOT a Vacation

The GOOD news is that we have a 10 deep team .... maybe more ... and they can play ... maybe for even 40 minutes.

the first 5 Minutes were great ... and yes we should have beat 'Nova and we will beat people ... the team struggled early and needs to find itself ... but that you have all figured out by now ....

Impressions from a non-technical perspective ...

Doron (DOOR-on) Perkins is VERY impressive ... VERY athletic not your average Bronco by any means ... can shoot ... but really makes things happen ... really works well inside in extreme traffic ...

J.R. Patrick ... looks better than any time I had seen him .. very mature ... had a great streak a little past halfway in the 1st half of the Villinova game ... a block in traffic ... and two threes all in a couple of minutes

Travis Niesen ... is HUNGRY ... he does play intense (at one point in the CMU game DD took him out quick before he ate a ref) ... has a nice shooting touch and doesn't seem likely to back down to anyone

Scott Dougherty is a very nice suprise ... looks very composed ... kinda reminds me of Ethan Rohde as a solid player who will continue to develop and will have a breakout game ... seems to be further along than Kyle or Brandon now ... could stay ahead if he improves ...

Sean Denison was not involved that much ... but is a good looking kid ... when the Broncos figure out how to best utilize all their talents he could be a big addition ... (right now we have about 10 who I think could start and if playing their game I would think not drop off much)

that being said we need to find that game .... maybe Central Mich. was that game ... all the teams (less SCU) in the tournament were very athletic ... CMU included ... but we handled them (and should have handled 'Nova)... so there is hope ...

our 3pt shooting for the most part (especially the first two games) just wasn't there ... the opportunities were not created in the first two games ... to me Brandon never looked as sharp as last year and Kyle missed too many shots (especially those late FT vs. 'Nova) ...

Now we have to remember that this is VERY early in the season ... and Kyle was off for a year ... so perhaps timing is way off ... if that is the case then we have the tools to make some NOISE this year ....

Thanks for the report. Besides Rohe, anyone look bad those last 2 games? By the way his minutes were way down vs Fresno State and Bailey continues to shoot too much and not well. This is consistent with his first two years thus not a fluke.

It seems to me that Davey ought to let the team get out and run more with all the athleticism and unfortunate lack of ability to shoot at a decent percentage in the half court offense. That might be good for moral (rarely a problem) and development (always a problem) too.

We just beat Fresno. Not sure how they are rated but that seems like a good win for us.

per FSU's website ...

Fresno State, the defending WAC champion, checked in at second in the media poll and fourth on the coaches' ballots. Last year, the Bulldogs were picked to finish fifth by both the coaches and media before embarking on a 20-8 (13-5 WAC) season that ultimately saw them win their second conference title in three years.

--- and on the Maui follow-up

I'd say the stats show that Legge is not playing up to where the coaches would like him to be ... just check out his stats and playing time ... not sure why ... just isn't looking fired up (always seems to be a bit of an issue) maybe the challenge from Travis will get him moving ...

did not see the FSU game but liked Travis' numbers (almost a double-double in 29 min. 2 steals only 1 TO and "only" 3 fouls -- as a friend once said ... they 'give' you 5 ... you should use them )
