I saw the three ten minute scrimmages on Saturday. Here are some random observations:
Travis Niesen looks like a comer. He is active, with a nose for the ball on defense and offense; He's not afraid to mix it up inside, can draw fouls and is by far the most atlhetic Bronco 6'7" or taller. It's hard to judge how effective he'll be because the guys who would challenge him the most( Legge and Borchard) were out wirh injuries. Brandon Rohe has great range on his jumpshot and is not afraid to pull the trigger. I agree with the poster who projects him as a 2-3 year starter. Bailey played with more control than I've seen previously and was better about getting his feet under him when he shot. Jim Howell seemed a bit more polished offensively with a smooth little jump hook, but again when it's hard to really know what that means when he's guarded by Tibbets. Tibbets, by the way looks athletic, runs the court well and appears to have an upside if he'd relax a little bit. Every time he had a shot, he'd tighten up and "alligator arm" it. He also needs to get stronger.
As to the four players (all potential starters)who didn't play, according to DD, Kargbo just took a cortisone shot in the back to treat an ailing disk. Borchard took a cortisone injection one for one of his feet. He is able to practice and should be okay to go for the season. Legge has swelling in one of his knees that requires rest. The potential area for concern is JR Patrick, who according to his JC coach and the players I talked to has range, can jump and has a good handle to boot. He cracked his kneecap this summer and required surgery. ( While this was not the devastaing season crunching injury that Brian Jones experienced(Thanks Adonal Foyle), there is a slight chance he might have to redshirt. That would create some unforseen problems for the Broncos. I think a healthy Patrick would have picked up a lot of the scoring slack caused by Ross's departure. even if he plays, there's no guarentee he'll be 100%.
It was a treat to watch Davey coach; you really were able to appreciate his attention to detail. At every time out and at the end of each scrimmage, he had specific comments--concise and pointed--to each player. Direct, but non confrontational with players and very calm. The guy deserves a healthy season with effective play from his bigs. Given the number of injuries, you couldn't tell from this scrimmage if that's going to happen.Still one should expect them to push the ball up the floor a bit more quickly with more pressure on the ball.

Thanks for the game report!
How about Ethan Rohde? He scored close to 20 points. Not bad for a sophmore who was a walk-on. Can he start if Patrick is hurt and can he be any good?

Rhode scored the quietest 20 points I've ever seen. I noted that he shot well, but had no idea he scored that many. Given his range and size, maybe he could start. There are questions about his quickness and defense that might limit the possibility. He is smart, hardworking (a source close to the program descibed him as Jaime Holmes with a jump shot)and plays under control and within the flow of the offense. He seems to get his shot off pretty quickly, but I don't know if he would be able to create his scoring opportunities. If Patrick is out, the possible starters could be Kargbo, Altheimer or Rhode. It's too early and the team's too injured to tell yet.

possible starters -- gobroncs, 14:31:45 10/29/02 Tue
So who do you think will start at the other wing position? It seems to me that both are wide open so TWO of Kargbo, Altheimer, Rhode, Rohe or Nieson will have to start. The only clear starters are:
PG - Bailey
C - Howell
PF - Legge

I think it's too early to tell. If Patrick is healthy, I'd be suprised if he did'nt start. I also wouldn't be surprised if a healthy Borchard would supplant Howell. But as to the others it's , it will depend how injuries and performances shake out during practice.
