I have an 89 Bronco that does the same thing and will also shift rough between 3rd gear & overdrive. It seems like a lot of these bronco's do this. I have not even attempted to try to fix the problem since I have received many opinions as to what is wrong, such as the torque converter or driveshaft problems (splines) or even the suggestion of the transfer case. Even the Ford dealer or Ford Customer Service are not exactly sure of a solution because there are so many problems with Ford transmissions it could be anything. The Ford dealer said he could take a whack at it, but I'm not so sure I could afford the final bill. I have had many other significant problems with this vehicle and would never buy another Ford again. If you are looking at a 96 and my Bronco is an 89, it appears Ford has had this transmission(?) problem for a long time and the still can't get it right. I would recommend a no buy on any Bronco!
