Popping in exhaust system has resulted in a blown out muffler. Muffler man says that it is the air injection system letting air and fumes into the exhaust at the wrong time. He would not replace the muffler until I had this problem fixed first. So, he sent me to a mechanic.

The garage mechanic says that there is something in the air induction control system that is faulty. The mechanic disconnected the vacuum lines from the "diverter valve" in the air injection system and the popping stopped. So, I had the muffler replaced ($71.00).

The mechanic quoted a cost of $1100.00 to go through the "system" and eventually fix the proplem(s). He says that he is getting many codes showing problems existing everywhere. But, it's just the air injection system that is faulty.

The mechanic did replace the small motor on the carb. He said that it wa definitely bad. Since it was bad I told him to replace it even though it would not stop the popping and exploding. He charged $206 for this and the diagnosis (which is worthless).

So, that's $277.00 for one big pop in the exhaust system.

Where do I start? Help??? Have to fix this one myself. Can't afford $1100.00.
