Subject: That doesn't make sense. Then why have masters at all?
In reply to: There is a reason why 's message, "the language in the syllabus was specifically changed last year" on 10:38:53 08/25/23 Fri

I can't list the actual SRO Syllabus language as there is a length limit on this forum. But the key difference is thus: in 2021 there was a clarification given for Adult Solo Dancer, which was removed in 2022:

****That an Adult Dancer beyond Beginner is defined as any dancer who started Irish dancing at the age of 18 or older, or any dancer 18 or older who has not competed in at least five years in a Youth competition AND has never placed in the top three in a youth Preliminary competition of more than five competitors.****

The question becomes, was the language removed specifically to change the definition of Adult Dancer, or was it removed because it was believed that the clarification was unnecessary? If the former is true, then the supposed rule change would in fact permit Masters dancers to dance in Adults, as anyone who took a five year break from competition, even a world champion, would qualify as an Adult. But if this is the case, why have a Masters competition at all? The Masters competition would be identical to a 25&O ladies category with no qualifications for Nationals or Worlds, which no one would ever choose to compete in. Or was the point, rather, as made obvious by the 2021 SRO Syllabus, to prevent the Adult category from always having a top podium of former champ dancers, as was becoming the norm? If the point was to make the Masters category irrelevant, why not just get rid of the Masters category? It simply does not make sense to invent Masters and then undermine it a year later. It seems obvious that the removal of the clarification was because it was believed to be no longer necessary.
