Subject: PURPLE BUTTERFLY Received Invitation From Cannes (MonkeyPeaches Exclusive) [October 11, 2002]

According to Nanfang Daily, PURPLE BUTTERFLY has been invited to be premièred at next year's Cannes Film Festival. Shanghai Film Studio said they woul accept the invitation once getting approved from Chinese Film Bureau. Zhong Zheng, manager of a division of the studio, in charging co-production with foreign studios, said the film was better than expected. "PURPLE BUTTERFLY has inherited the style of SUZHOU RIVER (both were directed by Lou Ye). The image, the music, the scene design and the editing are all very artistic. It has a very strong storyline, therefore it is not a pure artistic film and will be a little bit like a commercial film," said Zhong Zheng, "I don't think it is a love story and love is only part of it. The director is showing (us) life and the relationship between people. It will be very touching. In the film, the passion is hidden inside and has a primitive feel of moving and tragic." Post-production will complete by March next year and the film will be released about two months later. Director Lou Ye was banned from directing for two years by Chinese Film Bureau for sending his directing début SUZHOU RIVER to Tokyo Film Festival. PURPLE BUTTERFLY is only his second film.
