To a 27-year-old young man who is, till today, still being called the name "Xiao Guai" which people used during his younger days, it is an embarrassment. So yesterday, Alec, who doesn't wish to be called "Guai Guai Hu" anymore by others, told reporters, "That name is a restriction to me now; because the image of "Guai Guai Hu" has reached a bottle neck, I moved into television. I hope that everyone will accept me the way I am now; don't keep putting that hat on me, I feel very uncomfortable."
I first got to know Alec Su some 10 years ago. At that time he was one of the members of the most popular Chinese music teenybopper group, Little Tigers. His healthy and concientious image made him the idol of many young people; even parents also used him as a role model when educating their children. Because of his intelligence and talent, because he is hardworking and industrious, he was admitted into a prestigious Taiwan university. But in the midst of this wholesome image, Alec wasn't happy; he said, "I was under a lot of pressure at that time; it was difficult striking a balance between work and studies. That image was too good to be true; it became a burden." It was said that he was a loner in the university; he even shed silent tears in private. After entering the 3rd year in the university, he decided to stop his studies.
A reporter asked him if it's because he grew up in the entertainment circle he found it difficult to blend into a normal student's life. Alec answered, "I stopped my studies after entering 3rd year because on one hand I didn't like the specialty, and on the other hand it wasn't easy dividing time; both studies and work suffer. I was seldom in school, I wasn't close to my schoolmates. My regret is that I wasn't even like a student." His fast rise to fame has given him a very different youth from others; nobody knows behind the success lies his many troubles, he said, "I went to England after I stopped my studies, I especially wish to fill that gap, to search for my incomplete youth."
Does it mean that being in the entertainment circle one can better withstand pressures psychologically than a normal person? He laughed, "It's mainly work pressure, but it's better now; when there are ripples in the entertainment circle, I'll find ways to balance it out, I'm quite stable now. As long as I maintain a low profile, I won't experience very big differences in my emotions." Perhaps, if one cannot understand these, one wouldn't understand the struggles of being in the entertainment industry. But in the eyes of many young men and women, Alec's success is a beautiful fairytale, many perhaps hope to step just as unexpectedly into the bright lights of the entertainment circle; to this Alec said firmly, "I must tell them that it is not easy; nothing drops down from the sky. There are some young people who mainly enjoy but cannot take the hardship; I personally cannot appreciate this attitude, some young people now are egocentric, egocentricity easily leads to selfishness, no courtesy; I feel that one still has to be courteous, sincere and down-to-earth. Some immensely popular young celebrities now condone rebelliouness, I-do-as-I-like character; this call is very appealing to young people, but in reality during work, getting along with other people, this is very not good." When he was saying these, he was very sincere; that healthy, upwardly moving character is still the same idol image he had had on other people, he himself also admitted that his real personality is not very different from what the masses see him.
However, that young bright-eyed youth will grow older, fans will also grow up, what plans does a now-immensely popular Alec has for himself in the entertainment life? He seemed not to have given much thought, he said, "I don't think any celebrity can stay at the peak for long, I'm already prepared. I feel that if I can leave anything in my entertainment life, like I'm able to hold a concert in Mainland this year, if it is approved; if that has materialised and I quit the entertainment industry now, I've left something behind."
Our interview ended in the midst of the media's wave after wave of embrace. Standing and smiling under the spotlights and being heavily surrounded, that appealing big young boy still had many fans waiting for his autograph. An activity involving him is to be announced to the public; that will be Master Kang's Green Tea. "Alec Su Looking For Best Female Partner" promotions will attract many girls with star-filled dreams forward; the terms are seductive: the winner will not only co-star with Alec in the advertisement, there is also $50 000 cash (in Renminbi, I think) and an opportunity to become a "sister" to Alec -- a contract with his managing company Hong Kong's Tian Zhong Entertainment Pte Ltd. Thinking of Alec's words of warning to his young fans "it isn't easy to succeed in the entertainment circle", one wonders if those girls are prepared.
