hey i had this same problem... what my problem was there is a elctrical switch on the back of the trans, make sure the wires are hooked up.
I checked mine and they were disconnected so the cdi box thought it was in reverse all the time.there is a rev limiter in the tranny for reverse and if its unhooked it thinks its in reverse all the time, so try thar first.... mike
