Some 50 people came on a cold rainy evening to the
first session of joint study, organized by the Interfaith Encounter Association in cooperation with Beit Hillel at the Hebrew University campus on Mt. Scopus in Jerusalem.

The session was led by Fr. Dr. David Neuhaus, a Jesuit
>Priest and a Professor at Bet Jalla Theological Seminary. Fr. David presented the Icon of transfiguration and several texts and led a lively discussion with the participants.

Some of the highlights of the evening are the following:

* Was Jesus a prophet? - definately Jesus has,
according to the Christian belief, prophetic qualities: he cries for the future destruction of the Temple, he sees into the hearts of people etc. But more important is his
being the fulfilment of the promices of God through
all the prophets.

* What is a Prophet?
The word "Prophet" comes from the Greek word "Prophetes" that is composed of two parts. The second part "Phene" means to speak.

The first part "Pro" has 3 possible meanings:
1. Before (in time): because the prophet owns a deep
>understanding of the past and of the present context - he can illustrate the possibilities for the future.
2. in front (in space): the prophet stands in fornt of the people on the one hand and in front of God on the other.
3. In the name of: the prophet does not convey his/her
own thoughts but what s/he gets form God. But the prophet also conveys the concerns of the people to God: the first time the word prophet is mentioned in the Bible is in when God tells Avimelech to ask Abraham to pray for him "as he is a prophet".

* Moses mediates between God and the people. as they are afraid to hear God directly. This fear is connected to the hiding of Adam from God: the sin causes embaracement and fear of God and the prophet's role is to bridge this gap.
By delivering the Torah to Israel, Moses brings back
the intimacy with God that was lost as a result of Adam's sin that made him hide from God.

* Summary of the Christian perspective:
1. The prophet (a) prays for the people, and (b)brings the word of God to the people;
2. The prophet is ready to be partner to God in the
act of creation;
3. The prophet gives an example to the role of the
whole of humanity, as all people are called to be the link between God and Humanity.
