Date Posted: Tue, Apr 26 2005, 1:30:37 we should recollect it yesterday. Anyway. it's never too late. Let's pray for them today. Yesterday - 25th April 2005 - was 90th Anniversary of Gallipoli Campaign. Anzacs (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) formed the backbone of a 200,000-man, British-led army that landed at Gallipoli in an attempt to take control of the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits and capture Istanbul, 180 miles to the east. But poor co-ordination between the Allies’ naval and ground forces gave the Turkstime to reinforce their positions. The British-led force ran into stiff resistance and ended up being evacuated from the peninsula in January 1916. Nearly 1 million soldiers fought in the trench warfare at Gallipoli. Nearly 3,000 New Zelanders, 8,000 Australians, 9,000 French, 21,000 British and Irish and 86,000 Turkish troops died attacking and defending the thin strip of land. The last known Gallipoli veteran, an Australian, died in 2002.
