Berti Vogts is in line to make a sensational comeback to Scottish football as coach of Hearts, The Daily Telegraph can reveal.

The former Scotland manager, who quit the post 16 months ago after three years in charge following a poor start to the Scots' World Cup qualifying campaign, is presently employed by the German Football Association, where his task is to co-ordinate the scouts who will watch every fixture in the tournament finals this summer.

However, he wants to return to football in an active role once the World Cup is over, and Hearts' owner, Vladimir Romanov, is scrutinising Vogts' credentials.

Vogts, who will turn 60 later this year, was not available for comment last night, but his Swiss lawyer, Andi Gross, on holiday in Arizona, spoke to the Telegraph last night.

"Whenever a job pops up, Berti's name is associated with it," Gross said. "There are maybe 15 jobs connected with him at the moment.

But it is true that Berti is interested in coming back into the game when he is finished with the World Cup. He still has ties in Scotland, of course, but I really cannot say more about any connection with Hearts at this moment."

Vogts' wife, from whom he is separated, and his teenage son, Justin, remained in Glasgow after he quit as Scotland boss. Vogts makes frequent visits back to the country and has kept a close eye on the turbulent events at Tynecastle, where Romanov is on his third coach of the season.

George Burley and his successor, Graham Rix, each lasted for around four months before being sacked by the autocratic banker.

The first team are now supervised by Valdas Ivanauskas, formerly coach of the Lithuanian club, Kaunas, who was himself dismissed by Romanov before being given a backroom post with Hearts in August.
