I agree with Hamlet's plan.
I think in a way it was smart for him to let Claudius conscous get to him.
The thought of the incident could eat up Claudius inside making him go crazy.
Therefore he could be unfit to rule the thrown and Hamlet could kill him and everybody would think that he died from madness.
