Non-DOS partition -- John Padgett, 06:02:57 12/30/02 Mon
Don´t ask me how it happened, but my computer was running an original and legal installation of Microsoft Office 98.
Suddenly the next day after turning it on, it now displays a message that Windows detects an illegal copy of the program and now it has blocked accces to the hard drive. I have tried getting to my files, but DOS does no even recognices the C: disk with all my files. Also a second slave disk that was also connected is no longer available either.
A friend of mine said that problably someone introduced a CDROM or a ZIP drive containing and illegal copy and probably Windows detected it and screwed up all the original partitions, so that the hard drives would no longer be able to be used unless they are formated again.
The problem is that both disk contain very important files that I would like to recover before formating the disk and re-intalling all the software.
After reading both disk with FDISK, it shows 3 partitions on both disk: 1 is Novell type, 2 and 3 are non-DOS partitions. And before this happend they both contained partitions of FAT32 type.
Is there a way to read a non-dos partition? Can I get acces to my files?
Any information will be most helpfull. Thank you.

I put in a cd and it doesn't play. it says to insert disk.I went to device manager and it says device either not present,not working properly or needs new drivers installed. I hit update driver and it says the device is already using the best driver!
In add new hardware wizard it has a Mitsumi cdrom controller listed with a yellow exclamation point on it. Does this have anything to do with the cd rom not working? Please help!

I am having a samsung cd RW drive and Sony DVD drive in my system. When I am playing cds (Audio or VCD, some times the system hangs and I am not able to work anything. Only way to come out is to re-start the system. Can you please guide what is going worng in this and which device I can suspect.

My cd rom isn't operating properly. I just had the cd rom repaired, recently. However.....I did try to install a printer, and that is when the problem started. I seem to remember hearing that there may be a "port" situation, thereby causing a "conflict". This may be causing the cd rom not to work properly. All the indicators on the computer (Device Manager, System Information) seem to be saying that the device is operating normally, but I have no operation. When I put the cd into the drive, I see the green indicator light come on, as though it is reading the disk, but goes out, in a few seconds. Please help me, if you can.

I installed linux on my computer without double booting to Windows 98, I just formatted the hard drive and then installed Mandrake Linux. Then I realized later on that I needed Windows for other programs that would not work on linux that I needed for school. But when I tried to install it, it wouldn't install. Then i tried to fisk but I still can't get it to work. The windows CD says there is an error with LBA and I can't delete the extended DOS partition to get it to work. And I deleted the Non-DOS partition, which I think is causing the error. Can someone please help.

2nd Hard Drive -- Barry, 16:43:21 03/06/03 Thu
Hi,
I had an old computer running Windows 98 with a Maxtor 2R015H1 primary HD and FAT32 file system. I bought a new 1.3gz Celeron computer running Windows XP Home Version with a Seagate HD and a NTFS file system. Because I needed the info off the Maxtor I tried to set it up as the slave drive in my new computer. I didn't realize I needed to uninstall the EZ-BIOS and went ahead and started up my new computer with the Maxtor configured and cabled as a slave.
When I started up my new computer everything seemed to be going fine. Windows detected the new drive and supposedly installed it. Unfortunately I could not access (find) this new drive. It does not show up anywhere in Widows Explorer for example. Now the Device Manager does see the drive and correctly indentifies it right down to the model number (above). When I click on Properties in the Device Manager it indicates that the drive is working properly and it says that its location is: Location 1 (1) - whatever that means? I tried clicking on the troubleshooting button in the Properties window and followed the sequence of questions which ultimately led to the suggestion that I find updated drivers for this model of the Maxtor HD. I do not believe that any such updated drivers exist.
I shut off my computer and tried starting it up again. This time I got the message
"Cannot reconnect all network drives. Click here to open My Computer to see the status of network drives." In the My Computer window it just lists all the drives (C and A drives, CD Rom, etc.) without even the faintest hint that a second hard drive exists. As before the Device Manager window does list the Maxtor drive.
In the Device Manager window I did check the ide ata/atapi controllers and there was no indication of anything amiss - no yellow or red ?'s or X's. I then went on to check the Primary IDE Channel. Both device 0 and device 1 said "DMA if available" (no PIO's). It did say that both devices 0 and 1 were using Ultra DMA Mode 4.
I did go to the Disk Manager window but the Maxtor is not listed there.
I then tried to start my new computer with the Maxtor as the only drive. I changed the jumpers on it to master, unpluged the Seagate drive and plugged the master connector on the cable into the Maxtor. The operating system kept indicating that it found new hardware and that it was searching for the appropriate software drivers which, except for 2 times, it always found and installed. My new computer was operating just like the old one except faster of course. I thought that perhaps with all the new drivers installed on it, maybe it would behave properly as a second drive. (Whether it would now behave properly in the old computer is still unanswered. I haven’t tried that yet) So I, proceeded to reconfigure the Maxtor as a slave and reconnected the Seagate and Maxtor appropriately. Initially the system says it needs to check the E drive which is the Maxtor. It then corrects corrupted files. This process takes about 1/2 hour! Also, everytime I boot up my system with this set up it goes through the same files it supposedly corrected the last time and corrects them again taking 1/2 hour each time. The system for the most part does recognize the Maxtor. Unlike my earlier attempts, it shows up as the E drive in Windows Explorer for example and in other applicatons when browsing the drives. Strangely it does not show up in the Disk Manager. Lastly, and probably most importantly, I cannot access any of the files on the Maxtor. When I click on the E drive in Windows Explorer for example, I get the message, “E:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error”. Bear in mind, there is nothing wrong with the Maxtor as a device. I can get all the information I want off of it when I configure it as the master in my new computer. So, the error lies elsewhere.
I checked again the Primary IDE Channel in the Device Manager. This time the Transfer Mode for Device 1 was in PIO Mode. There is a second window labelled Current Transfer Mode (for Device 1) which also displayed PIO Mode. I switched the PIO Mode to DMA if available in the Transfer Mode window. The system will not allow you to make the switch in the Current Transfer Mode window. I then rebooted the computer but it did not help. I had the same problems as before unable to access any of the files on the Maxtor. I tried going into the BIOS but it seems, although I am not sure, that even there one cannot switch the status of the Current Transfer Mode.
I also tried setting up the Maxtor as the slave on the second IDE channel. Needless to say it was of no help. The exact same problems occured as when it was on the primary IDE channel.
Someone finally told me of the need to uninstall the EZ-BIOS. So, I followed the instructions at Maxtor’s website and I downloaded and created a Maxblast diskette. I tried booting up my new computer off this diskette with only the Maxtor running (as the primary drive). After a few preliminary diagnostic lines from the operating system the screen goes blank and stays that way. Is there any hope for getting the Maxtor to behave properly as a slave drive? had a computer built for me by a local company. First the problem is that the computer crashes, freezes up, has a host of OE erros, exception 06 errors, vxd errors. The man who build my computer has change the operating system many times from ME, 2000 Professionl, 98 SE and nothing works.
This computer has a BioStar M6VLQ-A003 motherboard and a CTR 21 faxmodem v92, a 1 gig Intel Celeron processor, 256 mg of ram and a Maxtor DiamondMax 15gb hard drive (5400 RPM). The errors only seem to happen when I'm on the internet using Internet Explorer IE 6. I'm currently do not even have my printer or scanner hooked up and with a fresh install I still have all the problems right from the get go. I think these are all software conflicts, however they must be caused by the motherboard or modem. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions anyone may have.
