John... nice to see you are still at it ! Guidelines for a spinnaker pole are as Lawrence said. It should be no less than the distance between the mast and the jib tack ( at the deck ) I was going to make one at about 16'+. Being that I was on" Starfire " all of 2009 I got a ton of experience with spinnakers and poles. The decision of what to do has a lot to do with the amount of crew you have and your ability to jibe these sails and get the pole to the other side. There are two ways of rigging a pole...bridle or dip pole. On larger boats like ours.. bridles are difficult to deal with so we use the dip pole rig. You have to be able to slide your mast end of the pole far enough up the mast to let the pole " dip" inside the forestay before switching clews. When you combine that with double sheets on both sides ( guy and lazy sheet) it really is much easier than it sounds. I sailed the Grace south out of San Diego and every day I wish I had had a spinnaker. There is no other sail onthe boat worth anything going south besides a spinnaker. The main slogs in the swell and blocks the jib so it has to remain down most of the time and the mizzen has to be attached to preventers and provides little thrust on 12 tons of boat. It's aggravating. When you see that the headsail is all you've got.. and it's too small... spinnakers start looking like the only sail to use.
