Bummer. I'm going to see if I can get one of my brother's friends in Tokyo back on the case. I've had a bronze hasp on mine since I got it but the previous owner installed the long floppy part of the hasp on the hatch and the small part on the board. With this configuration, I occasionally get stuck inside when the hasp flops down over the other part. Of course, I can fix it by just reversing those two pieces but I'd much rather have the original lock working.

Good idea. I actually called Hori Locks on the telephone once, and made some progress, but then the language barrier became an issue. If your brother has friends who speak Japanese, I believe you will be sucessful in getting someone fromthe factory on the phone who can help you.
