They are made of Sitka Spruce like all the spars but it is not necessary to use that. I made mine from clear Douglas Fir and that's what I would recommend since you're up here in the PNW. They are not hard to make, just take a look at your current one and follow the pattern. Mine are 4 vertical laminations (old and new) and that's all you need. I have no real idea what they're talking about in regards to alternating grain, if you use quarter sawn wood there is not alternate grain to turn. It's not hard to do and for a lot less than the 7Gs you would have the experience and probably some new skills and tools to use on other projects.

I have to make one for my boat. I could easily make two. I was planning to use sitka or Doug fir, I don't think it matters. I could give you a quote if you're interested. I'm guessing it would be around $1,000. Where are you located? Did I mention I make my living as a cabinet/furniture maker?
Dan

Gidday Dan.
I might just take you up on the offer.
I don't imagine removal and refit is beyond me.
I'm in Sidney 20 minutes north of Victoria on Vancouver Island.
When do you plan building yours?
Is it for a Mariner 40?
I would like to see my sprit rebuilt of laminate sitka spruce or douglas fir.
Makes no difference to me.
I can get either on the Island here.
The original took 36 years to start rotting so the original design is fine with me.
Andrew
