Subject: Mizzen Staysail

Hello All,
I have been reading older post about the mizzen staysail. I think it would be a good item to have aboard. Does anyone know what the dimensions would be for an M36? Any thoughts on how to procure one? Where would the clew attach? How to trim? Are they made of light sail materiel?
Thanks,
Brian Gran Mariner 1973 M36 Hull 9

Brian, I've made my own sails and when my two staysails need replaceing I'll have Sailrite make up a kit for them too. It looks like Sailrite's data base doesn't carry the staysail. You can call them to see if they would make up one (1 800 348-2769). They will sew up the sail if you don't want to diy. You can check out Shadow's staysail picture on the owners page to see where the sails are attached. I've passed up a Catalina 38 once with these light air sails. I'd have these two sails on my boat if I were you.
Yours truly, Kathy

Kathy,

Thanks for your reply. That looks like a lot of sails up! Do you know what the square footage is? BTW are you still in Wilmington or San Pedro? I used to sail there for years in the 60's, 70's & 80's with my Dad. Does anyone have any interest in a Southern California Mariner's rendezvous? Thanks again for the photo's

Brian, Our Mariners can carry a lot of canvas. There is another sail that fits up top between the main an the mizzen, called a mule. I don't have that sail, but do have a small sail called a tallboy, it is
a light air cutter sail. I hate to say but Shadow an I are still on a ranch in Riverside county. I'm wrapping up some major restoration. Rendezvous sounds good to me. I'm pushing to get us back to the water so we could come. Do you have a block on the forward facing top of your mizzen mast so you can raise the mizzen up?
Yours truly, Kathy

A little slip up in the last post. A block on the forward top of the mizzen mast is needed to haul the mizzen staysail up.

Paul,
A pictures worth a thousand words. Thanks Paul. Yes my mizzen sstaysail block is attached to the metal (cranze iron?)at the top of the mizzen mast. This block would also be used for the mule,I belive to attach the tack? Then there'll need to be a block at the top of the main mast to raise the mule up the back of the main. My cutter staysail is attached to the forward part of the main mast, but 7.5' down from the top of the mast and the tallboy block is up closer to the top of the main mast.
Yours truly, Kathy
