The sea was rough, I was on the golf stream right after the wind shifted from the north to the east at 20kn. Should have shortened sails but I was happy topping 11+ kn, average 9+ because I only had 3 days window to go around Cape Hatteras before the wind would change and come from the north again. So I pushed her a bit to much. But sooner or later that was going to happen because of the dry rot under the sheave of the main halyard. I was lucky that it happened about 10-15 ml offshore and not when I was on S. Carolina's waters about 100 ml offshore. Also the mount for the steam light has rotted inside, effecting the mast a little as well, that's why i build a new steam light mount, and since I was in that point I made new spreaders as well. Scrape , clean and epoxy the joins in the hole length of the mast, etc. So,the reason was that on the top, inside, under the sheave the mast was dry rotted, rot gets where we can't see.

By the way (because has been discused before) the length of my mast was 33'3" and the sides were : fore and port 1", starbord 7/8" , aft 1.1/4" thick. Strange but true. I measured it there where I worked and at the bottom. So ...

I need to repalce my main mast on M31 #70 BOOJUM I have rot at the base any suggestions? thanks

I had the option to replace mine , at the boat yard where I took the mast down there was an aluminium one for $ 200.00 but would have change the look of the boat totally so... I ended up fixing the original and it cost me more. I got about $150 lumber, 1 gal epoxy west system (used the third of it only), sealer , varnish and new fasteners. total about $ 500.00 That include the new spreaders also. Now if you have decided to replace it, probably the mast of a Catalina 27 would be the right one for our boats and there are a lot of them around.
