Subject: Running Back Stays

Good for Reaching, or for heading DDW. I have seen the running back stays that Randall Reeves installed on Murre (M31 #150) but he is in Bora Bora, and hard to get a hold of. The specifications diagram for both M31 and M32 show what appears to be a running backstay, but to my knowledge, they were never installed. Randall's boat is the only Mariner I have seen that has one, but He himself installed it.
Since the mizzen does not have an actual back stay, the mizzen sheet provides the support. Running back stays would definitely afford some piece of mind when reaching or sailing down wind - you just have to be careful not to get Gybed.

Hi, Terry.

LOOOOOONG time.

The mizzen sheet is more than adequate. I had her with 40knots on the stern and if you pull in the mizzensheet tight you'll be ok.

How's my beloved ("Carpe Diem") "Bridget" doing ?

I'm sure you're keeping her in excellent shape.
Send some recent pics.

Best,
Bill Kranidis

Hi Bill. I guess it HAS been a long time, which the older I get seems to speed up!

Bridget is fine! I'll gather some shots and send them on to you.

The only reason I wondered about the backstays is that I noticed them in the specs, but like you both observe, not a necessary thing.

So, did you ever get your 40???
