Subject: Removing the 4.108 - Rebuild or Replace

Antifreeze leaking into the oil, 3 oil changes, no difference. Engine has been sitting for 15 years without being run, but I got it started with new fuel, filters and oil, started easily, runs smooth, no smoke. However, antifreeze corrodes the bearings and who knows what else. The engine is a mess externally. I've got to remove it and either rebuild, quote locally $8,500. wow, or attempt to rebuild myself, have never done that before, or find a replacement such as a Yanmar 3JH40 for $5,800 new including gear, panel etc or Possibly a 50HP Beta which I hear will line up on the mounts.

Seems I should keep around 40 HP.

I plan to remove accessories and drive to reduce size and wt before I get the engine out. Thinking I may be able by cutting out the bulkhead under the mizzen step to slide it out of the cockpit.

This project can be seen here

Thanks for any advice,

Hal

Hal-
I took my 4.107 out thru the companionway with a couple of cable winches and a rear "sky hook". I have a write up with pictures that I was going to send in for the projects section. I'll see if I can get that done ASAP.

I ended up replacing it with a rebuilt 4.107 in order to keep the same prop, shaft & transmission. Also installed it thru the companionway.
