Author: Lawrence Killingsworth M40 Ta' Ata Ori
Subject: Simpson-Lawrence Windlass
Ta' Ata Ori has a Simpson-Lawrence #519 S-Lectric windlass that is beginning to leak oil. It's a massive windlass and gets the job done for my 60# anchor and 250-feet of 3/8 inch chain, so I'd rather not replace it.
Anybody out there have an owner's manual for this windlass or know where I can get my hands on one? Also, any sources of spare parts would be welcome.
S-L was bought out by Lewmar years ago, but the Lewmar website isn't helpful. I'm going to give their 800 number a call this morning. I'll report back on what I find out from them.

Humiliating -- Lawrence Killingsworth M40 Ta' Ata Ori, - Wednesday - 09/23/09 - 11:31am
Well, that was humiliating. The Lewmar customer service rep just sorta laughed when I told him my windlass story. Seems like my windlass is an obsolete antique that he's never even heard of -- I guess I am, too.
So, I'd better either buy some rags to sop up the oil leak or look into getting a replacement windlass. Advice on replacement would be welcome from any of you Mariner 40 skippers out there.

A guy in Scotland -- Chris Hope ( Mariner 36 hull #3), - Wednesday - 09/23/09 - 7:53pm
From another websites, this guy was recommended for obsolete SL parts and apparently .. manuals. Said to be helpfull.. Though your particular model isn't listed on his website , seems worth a shot. There is contact info on his web site http://www.slspares.co.uk Sounds like you may just need to cut a new case gasket?

Thanks, Chris, I'll check it out.
And I think your diagnosis is correct.

Simpson-Lawrence Windlass -- Eric Schoenberg, - Tuesday - 10/ 6/09 - 2:55am
When I had to rebuild my SL 510 a few years ago, I had the same problems locating help, until I ran into this lead: •: Florida Rigging & Hydraulics 800-718-1649. Service: Brook (call him early), Parts- Tim
They were very familiar with the windlass and helped a great deal, as well as supplying all the needed parts.

Tigres -- Lawrence Killingsworth M40 Ta' Ata Ori, - Tuesday - 10/ 6/09 - 11:30am
Thanks, Eric, but I've decided replacement of the windlass is the better option. My SL windlass is 40 years old and who knows what part will go next.
I'm thinking probably to go with a Lofrans Tigres windlass. Same style as the SL and it should have plenty of power to get the job done.
