Matthieu,

your boat was made in California (1972 was the last year the last FEY M32's were built in Japan). Even though it was "marketed" as a M32, it's actually a M31 (as were all "M32's" built in California). That's why it doesn't have the cockpit taffrail, the thick higher toerail and the clippered bow (though, some Cali M32's were ordered with the clipper bow).

The reason the FEY M31/M32 were assigned as such, it was because of the clipper bow that gave the M32' the extra foot in length.

Bill, I'm a bit confused about this subject. Not that I think is much. I was told by the first owners of my boat, that mine was the first mariner 32 built in California.ours being built in feb.1977. But, I don't have the taffrail, but do have the clipper bow. I have the oringal bill of sale and owner papers from the company saying Mariner 32'with serial numbers reflecting the same.What give here? Other than taffrail and clipper bow the 31' and 32' basic measurements are the same...right? Besides all that, having a great time sailing in this wind lately!! Take care, Jake. s/v Maranatha.

Yes, same boats. Yours has the clipper bow, that's why it's a legit 32. What I have noticed is that some California boats are labeled as 32's EVEN if they don't sport the clipper bow, for marketing purposes.

All FEY M32's sported the clipper bow, cockpit taffrail and thicker/higher toerails.

Great to see "Maranatha" is being used properly :-)

Man, I'm itching for some sailing :-(

So,if the only difference between the m31 and m32 is the clipper bow (as far as overall length goes), it follows then that one could make a(n) m32 clipper bow for one's m31. There must be some plans for this piece somewhere.....anyone?

But you might check w/the Adrian on Taygeta. He replaced his "clipper" extension.

While most 31's do not have a clipper bow, there are exceptions. While there are not too many instances, our boat, a 31 does have a clipper bow and its registration indicates that it is indeed a 31

Now I am confused. Isn't a 31 with a clipper bow actually a 32 with the standard combing board cockpit( i.e. without the taff rail?) Just semantics, I suppose.

Hi Gitano,

"Scandia Dream", hull 69, has a clipper bow and is registered as a 31 with the DMV in California. While 31's like 'Scandia' are rare, there are a few. For instance, check "Fairchild", hull 90, and "Destiny", hull 91, on the list of owners.

I have no idea why there was a difference; perhaps it had something to do with a special order of some sort. For instance, another 31 at our marina has an entirely different (and very Spartan) interior because her original owner placed a special order for a unique salon and forward berth, which he planned to complete himself.

Indeed. Have a look at M32 Hull #?, Katheryn Grace, which has regular combing boards like our M31's (in lieu of the taff rail), and what appears to be a clipper bow. Its just a matter of symantics I think, and what was documented. I do believe that all 32's have the clipper bow. If a 31 has a clipper bow, then technically, she could also be a 32. Regardless, they are all the same down below, notwithstanding custom changes or upgrades.
