Subject: ketch rig--thanks to randall, mike and ian

Thanks to randall, mike, and ian for your observations and insights on ketch rigs. They were a great help in putting the piece together.

If you're interested, the article--"The Venerable Ketch"--also includes some observations and opinions from three marine architects I phoned. It also has a few historical vignettes I managed to dig up at the college library (e.a. the first ketch was probably a "nef"--the Viking Kalmar boat which had a mizzen or "after" to help steer the beast--dates back to about 1000 AD. Also, the rig was popular with European navies of the 16th century because of their stability--used them to launch mortars on shore-side nasties).

Anyway, it'll come out in "Sailing" sometime later this year--with paintings (16th and 17th century) and photos (our Mariner 31).

If any of you have some sharp, first-rate action shots of your own rig, send them along (one photo per email, please), and if they get published, I'll split the royalty.

My email is

cheers,
matts

thanks again,
matts
