Subject: Hull Numbers

I just purchased a 1972 Mariner 40 "Endeavour". I located my hull number on the forward side of a bulkhead in the "v" berth. I later noticed it written on most of the cabinet drawers. It is engraved as "GM 61" with a tag which says "made in Japan"

I was thinking about adding my vessel to the list at the owner's site, but I noticed that another 40 has the same hull number I do. I am a bit confused.

Any help in clarifying this situation would be welcome.

I have the boat listed as #GM61. My boat is also tagged as #GM61. The main sail also has 61. Have you looked at your sail to see what is on it? Not that it make a difference. My title also is listed as GM61. Who knows, I could have a C&C 28'

I noticed an older discussion about duplicate hull numbers in this forum. Is this a common problem? I have been told that they built Mariners at 2 differient yards. Is this true, if so did the 2 locations duplicate hull numbers?
Any insight is appreciated.

Greg, I contacted the coast guard concerning the duplicate hull numbers. I was informed that there are several hull number 61's out there. They said that hull numbers were not verified until 1978. I have requested a coast guard hull number. When the process is completed, I will post that number.

Mike,
I am assuming that the USCG hull number will be the same as your documentation number. If this is true I have an engraved doc. number that I can list my boat on the site under.
