Gordon,

I don't see the "forward going" stay on the M40 brochure you refer to, but there sure is one on the M31 drawing on the MOA site (down at the bottom of the specs page). I’d bet, however, that this is meant to indicate the location of the mizzen staysail rig--not a permanent stay.

The mizzen on Murre (and the M31 in the drawing) is stayed just like your 40. The upper shroud is directly in line w/the mast; the lower comes at a chainplate about 6 inches aft. Alone these seem entirely inadequate (though to be fair, we don't hear of Mariner mizzens going by the board with anything like frequency).

I suspect that running backs became standard compliment at some later point or were optional because Murre has two that look factory. They lead into “fancy” bronze bases on deck and attach to a “purpose built” mast head via two small tangs just above the mizzen topnlift attach point. See my not-so-great photo at bottom. On the right side of the photo you’ll see three small wire ropes. The two on the right are the two running backs; the one on the left is the topnlift. The mizzen head rig appears to be purpose built for these backs. Maybe yours is too? If not, it’s an easy thing to jury up.
