I haven't fully stripped the mast top yet but there is definitely a metal box of some kind that the sheave rides in. At first I thought a new sheave and a router would take care of the issue but I don't think that is actually the case. BTW I have a request in at our library for an article from March 1990 Sail called "Harnessing the Mule". I hope it goes into great detail. I'll let you know when it gets here.
