Yes, there is a depth sounder on the Gypsy Mariner, but Hurricane Katrina took boats to places where none had gone before. As to the grounding off the Altlantic City coast in the 1980s, I think the official report was that the captain was below sleeping and the crew, after being driven for a few days in wet weather and heavy seas, got attracted to the bright lights of Atlantic City and the dreams of free rum and warmth like ... well, like moths to a flame! BTW, these photos from the 1980's grounding were reportedly used by BoatUS for many years in their ads.

Depth sounders are good to CONFIRM groundings!

I wish I could find one the would show the real depth in real time. Most of them lag by at least one full boat length while moving at a minimum speed....
