Subject: Maximum Rudder Angle
I have a 1976 Mariner 36. The previous owner replaced the worm gear with a hydrolic drive. The angles of rudder deflection range from 50 degrees starburd to 45 degrees port. In my reading and discussions with others, the maximun usable rudder angle is 35 degrees. I am therefore going to install some rudder stops to limit the rudder angle.
What I would like to know from you co-Mariner owners is....What angle does your boat's rudder go to?
Also, what input do you have on this issue of maximum usable rudder angle. Is 35 degrees the limit I should make my stops at?
Thanks for you input

Deflection angle... -- GeneVT TM 36C Sandpiper, - Thursday - 08/24/06 - 5:26pm
Terry,
forty degrees either side of center and is symetrical.
We have hull #330 built in 1987 in the Tayana yard. The steering is by quadrant and cable.
I hope that helps.
best wishes

Good to Know -- Terry, - Saturday - 08/26/06 - 12:42am
Thanks for the informatiion Gene. I wish my boat had a cable/chain system with pedistal but would cost way too much to convert over to that.
I will be building a pedistal, current wheel is in the box aft of the cockpit well.
I will probably adjust my rudder angle to something between 35 and 40 degrees. I might make it adjustable also.
Tal to you soon
Terry

Tiller angle -- Gordon, - Saturday - 08/26/06 - 11:28am
The total angle is 95 degrees on the M40 (Trieste). I also put a hydraulic steering unit on my boat. I've been modifying it to accommodate a 'tiller indicator' gauge too, at least on the M40, maneuvering is always tricky - esp. in reverse. It's been very helpful, I recommend it. Gordon
