You're probably right if you think this show has a liberal slant. I haven't noticed much of one, except I guess on the issue of gun control. I think they have done a great job being even-handed on issues such as censorship. My only point is that a show runs the same risk of turning off viewers by taking a conservative stance as it does taking a liberal stance. There are many conservatives who won't watch The West Wing because of its liberal slant. If the show took a conservative slant, it would turn off at least an equal number of liberals.

In my opinion, most American shows that take a political slant tend to slant liberal. There are exceptions. 7th Heaven comes to mind. I can think of two possible explanations for this. The most obvious is that people in the television industry tend to be liberal. The other is that television critics tend to be liberal.

No doubt many liberals would still watch the West Wing if the President was conservative, but would it be as highly regarded by critics? My guess is it wouldn't. In fact, it is hard for me to imagine a show on a major network protraying a president fighting to ban abortion and eliminate the capital gains tax rather than protecting the estate tax and pressing for hate crime legislation.
