Substitute Teachers.. I was a very successful substitute teacher for several years in the Baltimore Public Schools System. The Irony of it was that the High School I attended had litterally thrown me out in my junior year. I was one of the worst students in the all male High School at that time. I was once told that I held the school's all time record for suspensions. I helped traumitize an older French teacher, with a hand full of other bad students, to the point that he had a complete breakdown and was admitted to a local phsyciatric institution. He even sent the principal a letter blaming his condition on me and two other students. When they through me out, I was failing 5 out of 5 classes. It was so bad that my parents refused to attend any more meetings with the vice-principal in charge of discipline. After a winter of hard labor, outdoor jobs in freezing weather, I came to my senses, went to night school and made up all of the classes that I had failed and entered the same High School in a big city wide Drop Back In Program for my senior year. I made the Honor Roll and given a special exemption to enter a College for teachers. To earn money I started substitute teaching and was assigned to my old High School. You can imagine the startled looks of my old junior year teachers the first day I entered the Teacher's Lounge to eat lunch. Some thought I had returned for revenge until they discovered that I was teaching there. I was great at subbing and the word got around fast. Several regular teachers started asking me questions about controlling the classroom. I never had a discipline problem because I knew all of the worst games and how to spot them developing. I developed a technique for the first time I would be assigned a particular class. I would purposely come a few minutes late to give the class time to find out they were going to have a substitute and get pretty roudy. I would then briskly walk past the front door and enter through the rear door and slam it loudly. Then in my best drill sargent voice command them to settle down and take a seat. My line " I don't care what seat you take as long as it isn't mine" usually got a muffled chuckle as they quickly slid into their seats. If anyone hesitated or continued to talk, I would get right in their face and loudly, but not screaming, demand if they had a problem. Fron that point on control was never a problem. Especially if I had a good work plan for the class that kept everybody invovled. They school system kept calling me for two years after I stopped subbing to try and get me back. They even offered me a class of a teacher that was going to be out for the year and said that if that went well I could be a full time regular teacher as long as I continued to take college classes towards a teaching degree.
