I could see him doing exactly what he did. The first instinct he has as a principal is to try and be sympathetic to the needs of a student (former or not). Now, when the father of the girl came forward, that changed everything for me too.

She was also a student, wasn't she? In that moment, my instincts were to let the bugger fry alone. But, what I would have done differently was after telling the attorney that I wasn't going I would have A)called the father of the victim, or b) gone to the home of the victim's family instead. This would show even more the realization and redirected empathy.
