Without getting into specifics, the main reason that some of us don't feel comfortable "joining" an existing board is because the long-standing members of those clubs tend, however unintentionally, to be a little "cliqueish". They've formed personal relationships in many cases and it's really hard sometimes for new members to feel as if they're really part of things. Also, these groups have already established an identity, and a "tone" that they expect, inadvertently I'm sure, new people to adopt. We don't all fit the acceptability profile.
