Subject: Death of a Muse

This poem concludes my 'Muse' series (see Muse, Musing, Ode to My Muse further down the board).

The poems are partly inspired by the Muse of the Pre-Raphaelite painter and poet, Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Her name was Elizabeth Siddal. As well as being a talented artist and poet in her own right, she was the most admired of the Pre-Raphaelite models and inspired the whole image of woman at that time. They ultimately married but had a tempestuous and unhappy marriage. After giving birth to a still-born child, she committed suicide. Rossetti's creative powers diminished after the death of his muse and, grief stricken, he tried to contact her through seances. He had a failed suicide attempt but died a recluse much later in 1882. This poem is written from her point of view. The style reflects the pre-raphaelite form of that time.

Raphaela

My memory recalls your love
resting close to your breast
seeking more than pure desire
now my soul is far from rest.

Wandering in a waking dream
realise it could never be
life is nothing but broken glass
wanted only you to love me.

I cannot sacrifice for you
what is left for me to give
perpetual torment is mine
but will you ever me forgive.

I have but a hopeless heart
desires of frustrated pain
I may paint a smile for you
but may never laugh again.

Keep your arms around me
together we may sleep
leave me silently my love
alone for you will I weep.

But if you me really love
then let me know my dear
without you I only exist
but for you would reappear.

Reawaken dormant passion
fresh inspiration let us glean
come to me again my love
you are my Rossetti dream
