Abode of the Gods

The stunning peak of Shivling (6,543m) lies at the heart of the Gangotri region of Uttar Pradesh in India. Gangotri, the origin of the sacred river Ganges, widely acclaimed by mountaineers as the world's most beautiful mountain, it is also coveted by Hindus as the home of Shiva - one of their most important gods.

MYTHOLOGICAL PAST
The legend of Ganges says that the Ganges came down on earth after long penance of King Bhagirathi to Lord Shiva. However, due to the fact that the earth would be devastated if Ganges came down in her full force and her pride. It was proclaimed that Shiva's consort Goddess Uma or Parvati would bathe in Ganges daily. Here is the mystical aura that India is so famous for. Situated near the main temple is a Shivling (Shivling is the phallic form of Lord Shiva who is worshipped as the originator of life in this form) is said to be the place where Ganges was received by Lord Shiva in his locks. The Shivling is visible in the winters only when the water is clear. The entire Himalayan region is considered as the abode of gods by the Hindus

Abode of the Gods

The Lord of the Mountains appears
resplendent in the forest’s rich jewels.
Emerald greens entwine branches
heavy with lush, ruby red berries.
Intoxicating flowers fragrance the air.

In the land called Abode of the Gods
standing guard over Gangotri,
the glory of Shivling stands stiffly proud.
As the Ganges part and he enters her,
meandering down valleys serpent-like.

His lover, her coiled and matted hair
wet with the spray of the Ganges,
rises up, head held back in abandon
before lowering herself down on him.
Rivers wept at such a sight
whilst mountains saluted and said, ‘Amen‘.

The perfumed mountain’s balmy breezes
caress sweet-scented skin, passion spent.
They rest, safely shadowed in the shade
of the stately trees in the cool forest grove.

The forest depths resound with the
sweet-voiced songs of troops of Aspara.
In the distance flocks of kokila
maddened with passion sing.

The roar of the Ganges crashing into rocks
causes a moment of surprise before they
also excitedly break free through the canopy,
shrieking madly at the sight they witnessed.
