You are making less than Federal minimum wage, which is against the law. But since you are not having taxes out and therefore, I assume, being paid cash, you are not being paid legally, and have no recourse other than to leave. This is one of the many reasons why I feel that anyone who is a professional nanny, or wants to call themselves by the term nanny should NEVER accept cash. You have nothing to fall back on when you find out there is a problem. For example, even now, you could tell them they have to pay you the legal Federal Wage, and if they said sorry, and let you go, you could get unemployment. But you can't this way. Anyway, go to www.breedlove-online.com and request minimum wage information from them. Missouri does not have a state minimum wage, but rather follows Federal, which is $5.15 per hour. At 35 hours per week, that is 180.25 per week. That is the absolute minimum that you can legally make if your employers are paying the base minimum. I work in Arizona, where domestic wages are low, and even our 18 year old mother's helper makes $8 per hour, or $320 per week. I make 3 times that, but only work part-time (30 hours per week). And all nannies, please remember this: you do not have to accept a job just because it is offered. It needs to be right for both you and the family. When someone pulls what this family did, lowering the wage after you have accepted the job, then move on!!! If they will cheat you like this, what else will they do? Have some personal and professional self-respect and find an employer who will value and respect you.
