Beth,
I am not sure where Charlottesville is, but I know nannies in the DC area that have a great support group and playgroup network. If you are near there, I can put you in touch with them. Also, join some online nanny chat on yahoo for some instant friends! And if there are no other nannies in your area, consider posting a flyer at local pre-schools, gymboree, etc.(anywhere nannies hang out with their charges) and starting your own nanny play group and/or support group! There are suggestions on how to do this on the NAN website at www.nannyassociation.com . And if you can, consider joining NAN and the NANmembers online e-mail chat list. There are some awesome ladies there, and it can help with the loneliness right away. I have been there. I moved from a small town in Washington state to just outside of NYC right after college to take a nanny job, and experienced this also! And we are always here on this board, although it is not as active as an e-mail chat list.
hugs,
Tonya
