i have worked for a family of 2 kids for 5 years. i pick them up after school and stay til nighttime. i started at 350 and still get 350. I work approx 25-30 hours/week during the school year. sometimes less, sometimes more. i never know exactly when i am leaving at night--it may be 8 or 9pm, sometimes 11 or midnite, occiasionally 6pm or 2am.--whenever their mom gets home. it's rare that i get to know my schedule in advance and she is chronically late, when i do get an ETA. (don't get me wrong, she's a very nice person though). during the summer, i work for 2 months, about 40 hours/week (again sometimes a little less or more than 40) and then have a month off. the month is paid. the 40 hour week is still at 350. i also get 2 weeks around xmas, and most times there is a school vacation, i am also off and paid. first question--is the 350 fair? I think it's not b/c i have never had a raise, but then i think maybe it is b/c of vacations and stuff. second question--they lived in the same neighborhood as me until recently. now i commute to the village from way uptown. my pay is still 350/week and i pay my own train fare so it's really 330 now. and now that they are no longer a few blocks away, but about 40 minutes away by train, i will still be expected to be available to stay as long as needed at night. also, the other thing is that the kids are much older now--preteen and teen. so the job has changed. it's not young child care anymore, it's more of caring for one (she still needs to be picked up and taken to lessons and appts, etc) and keeping an eye out on the other. but being there for both to make dinner, make sure homework is getting done, not on the phone too much, etc. b/c of all the different variables--some pros and some cons, I just don't know if I am getting a totally fair deal or being taken advantage of. any input would be greatly appreciated!

gia,
i have been with the same family for 3 years. there is only one child (they have an older daughter that just graduated from law school and lives out of state). the girl is 14 years old, when i started she was 11 going into the sixth grade. now she is started highschool and i am continuing to work for them this year. like your situation, the job has changed quite a bit. no longer does she want to hang out with me, she comes home gets on the phone with her friends and has her own life. all i do is sit there so she isn't alone and drive her to her many activities.

when i first started i received 150/week for about 15/hrs a week. i would work from 3:30-6:30 m-f. her parents are both doctors with very busy schedules so when i work past 6:30 i got 10/hr for every hour over. also there are occasional saturday mornings and weekday mornings that i got the 10/hr. after the first year i got 180/week for same hours, after the second year i got 200/week for same hours. i still get the 10/hr for extra hours. i don't know what raise she will give me this year yet. it should be next week because that will be my 3 years. she hasn't said anything and i will ask if she doesn't because i am kind of expecting it. in the summer when i was with her all day i get 300/week flat rate. some days she hung out with friends or i drop them off at mall ect... she goes to camp for four weeks which i get paid for one week. christmas and other holidays i get paid, whenever they take family vacations i get paid.

i say all of this because i think you should have definitely been getting a raise all of these years, i think there should be a set schedule with time after that compensated. my family pays me well and it makes me feel that the really appreciate me. she is always giving me extra money and leaving thank you notes if it has been a particularly long week. she even started giving me $10 extra when gas prices when up. even though my charge is older that doesn't mean i am any less committed to her. i think your family needs to show you more appreciation.
