Subject: Pay raise question

Okay, perhaps I am an ingrate. I actually make a very nice salary of $15 an hour, but I support a family of 5 (two are teens!) on that wage and my rent alone is $1500. After my first year of employment, my employers gave me a bonus instead of a raise. The bonus was quite sizable. $5000. They said it IS my raise, but instead of breaking it down throughout the year, they had decided to give it to me in a lump sum. Sounded good to me.

Year #2 rolls around and instead of a raise, I am given another "lump-sum-raise" bonus. This time it is $3500. I was a little disappointed. Well, a lot, actually. Yes, it was a lot of money, but (in my eyes) it was not a raise, but a pay cut. In order for it to be a raise, it would have had to have been larger than the bonus the year before. Raises are additional money. Had I taken it spread throughout the year, my hourly rate after the first bonus would have been $17.02. Now, it has gone down to $16.42 Still a respectable salary, but NOT a raise! Any comments?
