I was wondering if there was anyone who could give me information on where I can go to find other nannies that are parents as well. I have been a nanny for 12 years and and have an 18 month old daughter as well. I need some support and some advice about the balance between my child and my charges. Thanks so much!

Hi Andrea!

I am a parent who also brings my daughter to work with me. She will be 4 in June and I have been bringing her to work ever since I was done with maternity leave. When she was first born I was with a family that had twins that were 5 and an older daughter so they were close to school age. I know what you mean by trying to find a balance. I didn't think the situation was fair either to my child or the children I was taking care of, so I quit when Maddie was a year and found a job with a newborn. Maddie and My charge were exactly a year apart, so there ages were much more compatible, which meant schedules would be similar. I also have several nanny friends who also bring children to work with them. We agree we tend to be harder on our own children to make sure there is no favoritism. Fortunately I have a husband who only works 9-2:30 during the week so he is able to bring Maddie in later and pick her up earlier to give me one on one bonding time with my charge. My employer and I both agree that this is a great relationship and the two children have a great bond between them.
For me and some of my nanny friends who are also parents, it is so much easier to raise my charge than it is my own child. It definately has changed my perspective on parents. It is a lot easier to be a nanny than to be a full time mom.
When it was time to start signing Maddie up for various activities, I made a conscience effort so it didn't interfere with my charge's schedule. I discussed every activity with my employers so they were in agreement and knew what was going on beforehand. Next year for preschool I had them sign up my charge and I am sending maddie according to his schedule.
I think it is Extra important that the nanny and parent have very similar parenting styles, more important than if the nanny did not have a child, because it is so important to have the same discipline for both sets of children. other things I now think of that i didn't before were do the nanny and parent allow the same kinds of snacks and foods? I say this because my daughter loves Hot dogs, but my employer hates them and rather that my charge di dnot have them. So I have to be very careful of not feeding maddie a hot dog when my charge is around.

how old are your charges? Good luck! I know you can make it work!

If you want to discuss more feel free to email me at kmewest@prodigy.net
