>According to my ortho, taking out the elastics for longer than just to brush (I had to eat in mine) made the pain worse because the ligaments inside the gums that the elastics stretch had to re-stretch each time after a rest long enough to un-stretch! In other words, the pain will stay horrible if you don't wear them full-time; full-time wear will accustom your mouth and it will stop hurting. They were the worst part to me: I had bite elastics, which are 3 tight triangles on each side that kept my teeth so clinched, I thought they might damage themselves and any movement resulted in the elastics snapping my teeth back together so hard, I screamed! But the severe pain only lasted about 4 days.

The only good part to elastics is that they work really well. Endure so as not to prolong your treatment.
