Hello...I was wondering if you could help me#

My orthodentist told me a few days ago that i would only need one more visit before i had my braces removed. (around 6 weeks) but until the visit last week i was wearing elastics to straigten my bite (the usual top teeth to bottom left behind teeth - meaning it was still okay to eat etc)

When he checked up on them he was very pleased but then curved out the straight piece of brass on the two teeth directly below the upper hooks and installed some metal to join the gap between the side teeth.

He didnt show me how to wear the elastics and currently they block me from eating and are very visible when i open my mouth...it causes some soreness though im used to this. Surely this cannot be right. The elastics arent elastic enough or im wearing the bands over the wrong hooks. As ot stands the elastic bands are not joined onto the tooth on the opposite side of the gap. He wasnts me to develop an over bite i think.

Can anyone explain this to me? Sorry for sounding dumb.
