Date Posted: 08:42:47 07/11/03 Fri In reply to: navigatormonk 's message, "What the hell happened?" on 16:41:21 07/10/03 Thu chuck was fired last year during the first week of december. he was interviewed by an iowa radio station a couple weeks later, where he chronicled the events that led to his dismissal. you can download that interview (as well a few show clips) here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Boomsie/ (you have to register with the group before you can access the files). since kiley wouldn't say anything about the situation on the air (other than it was a *contractual issue*), all we really had to go on were the words of the boomer himself. rumors ran rampant, suggesting booms was more of a pain in the ass off the air than he was live, and his firing was the result of him having pissed off some management person at premiere radio (perhaps the infamous greg nowak). regardless of anyone's personal feelings towards booms, he didn't deserve to be strung along for six months and then booted out the door. the company didn't have enough balls to fire him face-to-face. kiley was let go, frankly, because the show tanked after booms' departure. what made this show truly unique was the interaction between comic and straightman, the way kiley and booms played off one another. it wasn't rehearsed, it wasn't contrived. it just happened naturally. that's what made it so brilliant. without booms, all you had was a straightman. they brought in other *comedians* to try and fill booms' shoes (craig shoemaker, roger lodge), and when that didn't work, kiley tried to become the next *shock jock* by interviewing a prostitute during super bowl week. he brought her back a few weeks later for an update, and shortly thereafter found himself on what amounted to an extended leave of absence from which he never returned. the good news is chuck will return to radio on monday. the bad news, of course, is you can't listen to him unless you live in or around san antonio. an interesting note here: woai is owned by clear channel, which owns premiere radio.
