local sports media personality chuck booms caused a stir during a recent appearance with adelphia cable sports host les levine. booms said browns sources told him team head coach butch davis had threatened to quit if management insisted on keeping quarterback tim couch after the club began pursuing free-agent quarterback jeff garcia (the browns eventually signed garcia, effectively ending couch's career with the team). the browns strongly deny davis made any threat to quit, and team media relations director todd stewart dismisses booms' claim with a two-word response: "totally ludicrous." but booms, a longtime, vocal critic of davis, says he "absolutely" stands by his report.
