WOAI radio cancels 'Duel and Booms' afternoon talk show

WOAI radio canceled its much-ballyhooed afternoon drive show, "Duel and Booms," today and will begin a nationwide search for new talent to helm the 4 to 7 p.m. shift.

After six months on the air, the talk show was cut when WOAI management and co-host Chuck Booms came to a mutual decision that Booms could no longer co-host it from San Antonio. Family problems, which include the poor health of his mother, have kept him in Cleveland for more than a month, Booms said today.

"We want the show to be local and the hosts to be here focusing on the interests of San Antonio," said Tom Glade, vice president/market manager of Clear Channel-San Antonio.

Though the show’s most recent ratings book was "phenomenal," Glade said, co-host Chris Duel also was dropped.

WOAI hopes he’ll continue in another role at the station, he added.

"This gives us an opportunity to do something new and different with the afternoons," Glade said.

Until that happens, Charlie Parker, who handles mornings on WOAI, will fill the vacancy along with guest voices from other Clear Channel stations.
