Eli Lilly Says FDA Approves Symbyax - Update [LLY]
12/29/03 8:16:06 AM Monday before the bell, pharma major Eli Lilly and Co. (LLY) revealed that the FDA has approved Symbyax, which is used for the treatment of depressive episodes associated with bipolar disorder.
The company noted that that Symbyax is the first FDA-approved medication for bipolar depression, and it is a combination of olanzapine, the active ingredient in Zyprexa and fluoxetine, the active ingredient in Prozac.
Eli Lilly stated that Bipolar disorder is a complex mental illness characterized by debilitating mood swings ranging from episodes of deep depression marked by feelings of extreme guilt, sadness, anxiety and, at times, suicidal thoughts.
The company also said that the most common adverse events reported in patients taking Symbyax in clinical trials was drowsiness, while other common events noticed were weight gain, increased appetite, feeling weak, swelling, tremor, sore throat, and difficulty concentrating.
On Friday, shares of LLY ended at $70.62.
