Triple alliance. Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) on Friday announced that it will join with Dell (nasdaq: DELL - news - people ) to furnish the U.S. Air Force with software and related tech support, a package geared to streamline the acquisition process. The pact has been valued at some $500 million over six years. Under the terms of the deal, Bill Gates' software colossus plans to provide core server software, maintenance and upgrade support. The eponymous firm founded by Chairman Michael Dell will furnish more than 525,000 Microsoft desktop Windows and Office software licenses. Curt Kolcun, general manager for Microsoft Federal, declared in a statement that "by consolidating purchases of software and hardware products across its enterprise, the Air Force will be able to enhance [information technology] operations globally through better management, policies and planning." In early Friday afternoon trade on the Nasdaq, Dell shares fell 34 cents to $39.90, while Microsoft shares fell 8 cents to $26.99. More...
