Every time I'm in a Target or Wal*Mart and the cashier lets out a big sigh because the register won't scan the item and they have to manually key in the UPC code, I think back to my days at Hills #66 in Jamestown, N.Y.

When I first worked at Hills #66 we were using the old NCR 255 registers and the seven digit SKUs. The registers didn't even display the SKU as you were punching it in. And we punched in the Department, SKU and Amount for every item we rang up!

It got easier when we instituted the "Phoenix SKU system" with the four digit SKUs. Then the IBM 4683 registers went in, which couldn't take the beating that the NCRs did, but they were suppose to be better. At least they let you see what you were entering while you were doing it.

The next time I hear a "modern" cashier sigh because they have to punch something in manually, I'm going to tell them about the good 'ol days!

J.P.
